Electric vehicle towing done by the book
EVs are heavy, low and easy to damage if they're towed the old way. Our team has towed Tesla and Rivian vehicles for years, and we follow the manufacturer's procedures on every one.

Why EVs need a different approach
Most electric vehicle makers say the same thing: transport on a flatbed, with the wheels off the ground. When an EV's wheels turn, the drive motors can turn too, which can generate heat and current in a system that isn't running. Rivian's tow operator guide warns that towing with any wheels on the ground can cause significant damage and overheating. Tesla publishes similar guidance.
How we tow an EV
- Flatbed only. No wheel-lift, no dragging. See how our flatbed towing works.
- Transport or tow mode first. We put the vehicle in the right mode to release the parking brake before winching, following that model's procedure.
- Dead 12-volt battery. An EV with a dead low-voltage battery can refuse to shift, unlock or release its brake. We know where each model's jump points are and how to wake it up. On a Rivian R1T or R1S, for example, the jump points are at the rear hitch area.
- Correct tie-downs. We secure at the wheels or approved points, never across battery packs, brake lines or suspension parts.
- Slow, straight winching. Heavy EVs are winched gently and straight on to protect the drivetrain.

Experience with manufacturer towing
Skyline has handled OEM towing and roadside work for electric vehicles, including Tesla and Rivian vehicles, across Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Our team has also written towing reference material used in EV operator training. When you call about an EV, you're talking to people who have done this many times, not guessing.
Where we take it
Service centers, body shops, your home or charging locations. Tell us the destination when you call. For longer trips, including out of state, see long-distance transport.
Common questions
Can a Tesla or Rivian be towed with two wheels down?
Manufacturers generally say no, except briefly to get the car onto a flatbed with dollies or skates. We tow EVs on a flatbed.
My EV is completely dead and won't unlock. Can you still move it?
Usually. A dead 12-volt battery is the most common cause, and it can typically be powered externally so the car can be unlocked and put in transport mode.
Do you tow hybrids too?
Yes. Many hybrids and plug-in hybrids have the same flatbed requirement, and we treat them the same way.
Stuck right now?
Call us, or send the details online and we'll dispatch a truck.
