Roadside assistance costs either a yearly fee for a plan or a one-time charge each time you call. Paying per call with a local company in Metro Detroit, Skyline Towing charges $100 in Wayne County and $125 in Oakland County for a jump start, lockout or flat tire change. A tow is priced separately. Plans through insurers, auto clubs and credit cards vary widely, so compare what’s included, not just the price.

What affects the cost
- Where you are. Prices often differ by county or distance from the company.
- Parts. The service call covers the labor; a battery, tire or fuel costs extra.
- Whether it turns into a tow. If the car can’t be fixed on site, you pay for the tow too. Ask whether the roadside charge is applied or separate.
- Timing. Some companies charge more at night, on weekends or on holidays. Ask before you agree.

Plan or pay per call?
Add up how often you’ve needed roadside help in the last few years. If it’s rare, paying per call is usually cheaper than a yearly plan. If you’ve needed help more than once a year, or you drive an older car or travel a lot, a plan may save money. Before buying, check whether you already have coverage through your insurance, your car’s warranty or a credit card. Our plan comparison covers what to look for.
