To get a car unstuck from mud: stop spinning the tires, straighten the wheels, dig the mud away from the tires, and put something solid under the drive wheels (boards, gravel, floor mats or sand). Then use very light throttle in a low gear to ease forward or back the way you came. If the car is sunk to the frame or sliding, stop and call for a winch-out.
Step by step
- Stop. The moment the wheels spin without moving the car, take your foot off the gas. Spinning digs the tires deeper.
- Look. Check how deep the tires are, whether the underside is resting on mud, and which way has firmer ground. Backing out the way you came in is often easiest.
- Straighten the wheels.
- Dig. Clear mud from in front of and behind the tires, and from under the car if it’s high-centered.
- Add traction. Put boards, gravel, sticks, floor mats or sand right in front of (or behind) the drive wheels.
- Ease out. Use the gentlest throttle possible, in a low gear. Turn off traction control if it keeps cutting power, then turn it back on once you’re free.
- Rock gently if needed: forward a little, stop, reverse a little, repeating to build a path.
What not to do
- Don’t floor it. High wheelspin throws mud, overheats the transmission and buries the tires.
- Don’t have anyone stand behind or in front of the spinning wheels; mud and rocks can fly.
- Don’t pull with a rope tied to a bumper, and don’t use another car that might get stuck too.
Electric cars and AWD
EVs deliver torque instantly, so be especially gentle with the accelerator. Many have an off-road or traction mode that helps. All-wheel drive helps you get moving, but it won’t save a car sitting on its frame.
When to call for help
Call for a winch-out if the mud is above the bottom of the tires, the car is resting on its underside, it’s in a ditch or tilted, or you’ve tried for 10 to 15 minutes without progress. A tow operator can pull it out from solid ground without damaging the car.
