What You’re Paying For

Towing costs what it does because one bill has to cover far more than the time your car spends on the truck: an expensive truck, commercial insurance, a driver and dispatcher available around the clock, fuel, maintenance and calls that never get paid. Most of a fair tow price is explainable. This guide shows where the money goes, what makes one tow cost more than another, how to tell high pricing from gouging, and how to keep your own bill down.

Where the money goes

The truck and equipment

A new flatbed or wheel-lift truck is a major purchase, and it carries winches, straps, chains, dollies and lights that wear out and get replaced. Michigan road salt and potholes are hard on hydraulics, brakes and tires, so maintenance is a steady cost.

Insurance

A towing company insures the truck, its liability while working beside traffic, and your vehicle while it is in their care. Those premiums are due every month whether the phone rings or not.

Answering emergency calls at any hour

Breakdowns don’t keep office hours. A company that answers at 2 a.m. on a Sunday is paying a dispatcher and keeping drivers and fueled trucks ready, even on nights when few calls come in. Part of every bill pays for that availability.

Work that doesn’t get paid

Some jobs never get paid at all, such as a call that’s cancelled after the truck is already on the way. Those costs end up spread across paying customers.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="776" height="1024" src="https://skylinetowingservice.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_1832-776x1024.jpg" alt="Black Skyline Towing International flatbed hauling a vehicle on a two-lane road lined with fall trees" class="wp-image-1295" title="Why Is Towing So Expensive? Fuel, maintenance and insurance run whether the truck is loaded or not.

Why one tow costs more than another

Distance. Most companies charge a base rate plus a per-mile charge, so mileage is usually the biggest variable. See how per-mile towing charges work.

The vehicle. Larger vehicles and anything that needs a flatbed, like most all-wheel-drive cars and EVs, take more equipment.

Difficulty. A car in a ditch, deep snow or a tight parking structure may need a winch-out or extra rigging. A car that won’t shift into neutral needs dollies.

Accidents. Crash scenes take longer and involve cleanup, so accident tows are usually priced separately.

Timing. Some companies add charges for nights, weekends, holidays or storms. Ask.

For comparison, Skyline’s posted rate for a standard local tow is $125 in Wayne County and $145 in Oakland County with the first 5 miles included, then $4 per mile. The full breakdown is on our towing prices page.

High price or gouging?

A high price for a hard job isn’t gouging. Gouging usually looks like this:

No price before your car is hooked, or a price that changes when the truck arrives

A truck that shows up at a crash scene without anyone calling it

No company name or contact information on the truck

Refusing to itemize the bill or give a receipt

Storage charges that start immediately without being explained

Refusing to let you get medication, documents or a child seat out of the car

Rules depend on who ordered the tow. When police order a tow, the rates are often set by the city or the police department’s towing contract. When you call a company yourself, the price is whatever you agree to, so compare and get it in writing. Tows from private property follow separate state rules; see private property towing in Michigan.

How to pay less

Check whether you’re already covered. Many auto policies, some credit cards and most new-vehicle warranties include towing up to a mileage limit.

Ask for the total, including mileage and any fees, before you agree. Ask for it by text.

Pick the closest shop that can do the repair. Mileage adds up quickly.

If you only need a jump start, lockout or tire change, ask for roadside service instead of a tow. It costs less.

Have the car go straight to its final destination so storage never comes into it.

If you think you were overcharged

Ask for an itemized invoice and pay by card if you can. Photograph the truck, the invoice and your vehicle, and write down what you were quoted and by whom. For a police-ordered tow, contact the police department that ordered it. You can also file a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General’s Consumer Protection division. For money you already paid, small claims court is an option.

Get a straight price

Call Skyline Towing at (248) 832-6000. Dispatch will tell you what the job costs, and why, before a truck is sent.

Skyline Towing, 6450 E Hancock St, Detroit, MI 48207. (248)
