Because every situation is different, winch-outs are quoted by phone once we know where the car is and how it&#8217;s stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When you need a winch-out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wheels spinning in snow, mud or ice and the car won&#8217;t move<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Slid off the road into a ditch or a snowbank<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Stuck on a soft shoulder, lawn or unpaved lot<\/li>\n\n\n<li>High-centered on a snow pile or curb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the car is upside down, on its side, damaged, or in water, that&#8217;s a recovery, not a simple winch-out. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or the car is in a dangerous spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a winch-out works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The operator checks the scene, the ground and the vehicle&#8217;s position.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The cable is attached to a proper recovery point on the vehicle, not the bumper or suspension.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The truck is positioned and anchored so it doesn&#8217;t get pulled in too.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The vehicle is pulled out slowly and steadily, sometimes with a snatch block to change the angle or add pulling power.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The operator checks for damage. If it&#8217;s drivable, you&#8217;re on your way; if not, it can be towed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you call: what you can try safely<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re off the road and out of traffic, a few things often work: straighten the wheels, clear snow or mud from around the tires and under the car, use the gentlest throttle possible, and put sand, kitty litter or floor mats under the drive wheels for traction.
